1   Research Areas

1.1   Quality of Service in Heterogeneous Networks

There are essentially two ways to provide QoS for network applications. One is by resource reservation from the network's viewpoint; the other is by behavior adaptation from the application's viewpoint. The focus of our research is on application's behavior adaptation as a method of QoS provision.

For an application to achieve resource reservation or behavior adaptation, it first needs to be aware of the network environment. Awareness is the basis of adaptation. The knowledge of the characteristics of the network environment is necessary as well for the resource reservation or allocation approach.

The objective of this research is to develop an architecture for wireless awareness which will enhance the performance of networked multimedia applications in heterogeneous networks. Wireless awareness is the capability of network applications to be aware of the existence and characteristics of the wireless links in the communication path.

1.2   Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

The main focus of this research is routing in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs). We are particularly interested in the algorithms that scale well to the networks with very large number of nodes.
